Kircubbin P7’s visit Craigantlet Quarry
On Thursday 16th June, the P7 class from Kircubbin Integrated Primary School enjoyed a visit to Craigantlet Quarry. They enjoyed an informative, interactive, and educational visit. The children walked up to the viewing point and were surprised by the size and scale of the quarry. They had the opportunity to view a tipper lorry, an excavator, and a dump truck. An added surprise was a visit from Alan Rea, the "bee man" who explained the reasons and benefits of having bees on the site. The children in small groups each got to see the bees at their work outside the hive.
On the return journey, they passed the settlement ponds of the quarry. With the beautiful weather conditions on the day of the visit, Pierce Kirwan, Quarry Manager emphasised that whilst the water looked tempting, quarry water can be extremely dangerous and should never be entered. Cold water shock causes involuntary body reactions that can be as swift as they are deadly.
With the children all safety returned it was time to wave them off in their coach back to Kircubbin I.P.S.
