Band of Builders Charity Involvement
This is why we love our wee country!
We were delighted to be involved in this project by the wonderful charity Band of Builders, a charity which provides support to members of the UK construction industry facing life-changing or limiting circumstances.
The aim of Band of Builders' first Northern Ireland project was to help Kevin McGowan, a hard-working and enthusiastic brick layer turned contractor from Toomebridge. Beginning in 2011, Kevin began noticing difficulty walking, talking and swallowing and was eventually diagnosed with an extremely rare condition called progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy (PML).
The project involved extending the rear of Kevin’s property to provide a more comfortable living area by building a sunroom which followed through from the family kitchen. An access ramp was also built, allowing easier wheelchair access into the garden.
Companies and individuals from all over the country volunteered to help with this project, showing what a special place Northern Ireland is.
We were delighted to supply and fit the roof for the sunroom, including the felt, lath, lead and roof tiles. We also supplied and laid anti skid surfacing material to the access ramp.
We hope this, as well as the efforts from all other companies and volunteers, will have a significant impact on Kevin’s comfort at home.
Well done to all involved, and we wish Kevin and his wife, Margaret, the very best.
