Apprentice Story From Odhran Canning
“I have been working at Northstone for 6 months, enjoying every moment. Stephen and the contracting & engineering team helped me settle in very easily and put me at ease during my first few days. The team at Northstone were a great help in settling my initial nerves.
My first project was the N56 Dungloe to Cloghboile re-alignment scheme, where I worked closely with Conor, who introduced me to the environment in which I would be working. I was gradually given more responsibility as I gained experience and I really enjoyed this. I am currently working with Gavin on a surfacing contract and I have developed my skills on the GPS.
I feel very supported as an apprentice and after 6 months my skills have flourished. I now have many responsibilities within my role such as ordering materials, measuring and overseeing squads. At first these new responsibilities were quite daunting but with the support from everyone in the contracting division, I have become a more confident apprentice which I am very thankful for.
The main advantage of my apprenticeship journey is having the opportunity to apply the knowledge I am taught throughout my Construction Engineering with Surveying course at Northern Regional College. I am very thankful to the whole team at Northstone for such a warm welcoming and a successful journey so far”.
