Health and Safety Advisor

The Health & Safety Advisor will be responsible for providing Heath & Safety support to a range of operational locations and road contracts sites.

Reporting to the Health and Safety Manager, Northern Region Ireland Materials, work closely with the Health and Safety team to achieve continual improvement of company H&S standards and achieve targets.

 

About the Role

  • Undertake regular health and safety visits and audits of operational locations and contract sites in accordance with company targets.
  • Continual promotion of a positive safety culture among employees and subcontractors.
  • Implement the CRH Life Saving Rules, the Ireland Materials Health & Safety strategy and improvement plans.
  • Advise and assist employees on all aspects of health and safety management and legislation.
  • Investigate and report on incidents, near misses and high potential learning events.
  • Deliver company safety campaign and employee training as required.
  • Convene and lead health and safety meetings and employee consultations as required.
  • Prepare health and safety reports and/or statistics for company reports, meetings and as required.
  • Support to location and site teams in approval of contractors and hauliers, developing construction phase health and safety plans, developing risk assessments, health and safety standards and operating procedures.
  • Provide support to location managers during external audits.
  • Lead H&S project teams and develop company best practice.
  • Represent the company at Ireland Materials meetings and industry events and forums.

Personal Specification - Essential 

  • Have achieved a NEBOSH H&S Certificate as a minimum and be educated to degree standard or equivalent. Consideration will be given to suitably experienced applicants who are not graduates.
  • At least 2 year’s experience in an operational health and safety role.
  • Experience of construction, building materials or manufacturing industry.
  • Excellent communication skills - both written and verbal.
  • Be able to work on own initiative whilst able to work as part of the H&S team – must be a good team player.
  • Problem solving approach with willingness to develop effective solutions with employees and sub-contractors at all levels.
  • Good working knowledge of current health and safety legislation and practices.
  • Be flexible and responsive to incidents and requests for information.
  • Willing to develop skills and knowledge on an ongoing basis.
  • Willing to travel to company operational locations.
  • Hold a valid driving licence.

Personal Specification - Desirable

  • NEBOSH Diploma or equivalent
  • Chartered Member of IOSH
  • Experience in road construction and civil engineering.
  • Knowledge of both NI and ROI legislation.
  • Have experience as an ISO internal auditor.

Other Relevant Information

1.   Base is flexible – can be based at a major company location within Northstone Materials – e.g. Ballymena, Toome, Craigantlet, Croaghan, Mountfield – but must be prepared to meet regularly with the H&S team.

2.   They will be responsible for providing H&S support to a range of operational Northstone/ Island Aggregates/ Mattest locations and road contracts sites. Their allocated locations will depend on their base of work. Note - if the successful candidate is based south of Belfast they may be asked to support selected Roadstone Northern Region locations in the Republic of Ireland.

3.   Hybrid work – the successful candidate will be able to carry out office based work from home 1-2 days a week however the role will require them to be on site approximately 3 days a week and be able to respond quickly to incidents.
